About the scholarship system
Scholarships are intended to reduce the burden of tuition and living expenses when financial circumstances make it difficult for students to study, and to help them establish the foundations for living the life they were meant to lead as students. Scholarship systems include the New Tuition Support System for Higher Education, Japan Student Services Organization Scholarships, Local Government Scholarships, and various organization scholarships. When information about external scholarships is received by the university, it is posted on the university website or on campus, but there are also scholarships that are advertised independently by local governments and national sports associations.
Scholarship system and types
New higher education support system (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan Student Services Organization)
This system combines the support of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's "tuition fee reduction" and the provision of "grant-type scholarships" by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO).
The grant amount (monthly) and tuition exemption rate will be determined based on the household's financial requirements, etc. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has a maximum limit on the amount of tuition exemption.
Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)
There are two types of scholarships: "grant-type" scholarships, which do not require repayment in principle, and "loan-type" scholarships (interest-free/interest-bearing) that do require repayment. Applications are accepted twice a year, in spring (April) and autumn (September). For details on application eligibility and selection criteria, please refer to the Scholarship Information Digest.
Applications for sudden changes in household finances, emergency support, and short-term employment can be made at any time. Please contact the Student Affairs Division, Window 3.
